Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
